چکیده

We analyze the limitations imposed by sample absorption on the determination of the nonlinear refractive index by the Z-scan technique. By using a nanostructured thin film consisting of Cu nanocrystals embedded in a dielectric Al2O3 matrix as an example, we show that thermo-optical effects appearing when linear absorption is significant can be strongly misleading in the interpretation of the results of a Z scan. Even though this effect is not new, the widespread use of the Z-scan technique during the past several years makes it necessary to analyze explicitly the conditions under which the technique can be reliably applied and when more sophisticated techniques should be used instead. We discuss the contributions to the signal under different experimental conditions, several diagnostic techniques to discriminate true nonlinear effects from thermally induced phenomena, and different methods to reduce the thermal contribution. © 2002 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 000.2170, 160.4330, 190.3270, 190.4380, 190.4400, 190.4720, 190.4870.

Study of nonlinear optical properties of Carbon nanotubes synthesized by Nickel and Nickel-Cobalt catalysts using Z-scan technique

The nonlinear optical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied by using the Z-scan technique. Experiments are performed by CW second harmonic of Nd-YAG laser at 532 nm wavelength with a power of 40 mW. The samples are synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method in the presence of Nickel and Nickel-Cobalt catalysts. In this work, for the first time, effect of the typ...

اندازه‌گیری ضریب شکست غیر خطی در شیشه‌های آلاییده به بلورهای نیمرسانا

There are several techniques in use for non-linear refractive index measurement, namely, interferometric techniques, in which conventional inter-ferometers are used, degenerate for wave mixing (DFWM), and z-scan, Each of these techniques suffers from some shortcmings. For example conventional interferometers like Fabry-Perot and Twyman-Green need high quality optical components, unwanted refl...

Investigation of nonlinear optical properties of Ag nanoparticles

In this research, Ag nanoparticles were prepared by using g-radiation at concentration of 5.18×10-3 M and irradiated at different doses. A green laser was employed as excited source for measuring nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient. The measurements were done by z-scan method for both, closed and open aperture at temperature room. We deduced that with growth of size of Ag nano...

Nonlinear Responses and Optical Limiting Behavior of Ag Nanoparticle Suspension

In this study, the nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting performance of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in distilled water are investigated. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of the colloid is measured by the Z-scan technique. The optical limiting behavior of the AgNP suspension is investigated under exposure to nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The results show that nonlinear ...
